Terra Firma Social
Solid ground for unsteady times.
Where do you go when you aren't at home or at work?
There's a name for the places that are neither home nor work. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg called them third spaces, and for most of human history, they were a given…
Until now.
For many, remote work collapses the boundary between the first space (home) and the second (work), leaving millions of people cycling between the same four walls. At the same time, the muscle for casual, unstructured socializing has quietly atrophied because the conditions for practicing it have slowly disappeared.
Terra Firma exists to rebuild those conditions.
We design temporary third spaces: structured, low-key gatherings built around parallel play (the simple, underrated act of being in the same room with other people while each of you does your own thing). No icebreakers. No name tags. No pressure to perform extroversion you don't currently have.
Just a room, a reason to be in it, and other humans doing the same.
Our programming is designed for people who want community but find the traditional on-ramps (networking events, happy hours, forced mingling) more draining than the isolation they're trying to escape. We partner with local venues to bring these gatherings to spaces that already exist in your community, during hours that would otherwise go quiet.
Terra Firma won't fix everything, but it might give you somewhere to land.
current Experiences
No assigned reading. No discussion questions. No homework.
BYOB is an hour of shared silence with whatever you're currently reading, bookended by two optional 30-minute social windows for those who want to arrive early, linger after, or both. You are never required to talk to anyone. You are always welcome to.
Beverages encouraged. Dog-eared pages accepted.
An open invitation to get out of the house and be somewhere that isn't your living room.
The Break Room is a pop-up co-working session at a local cafe or venue where you’re welcome to work, think, decompress, or simply exist around other people. There is no agenda, no check-in, and no expectation of productivity. Some people get a lot done. Some people just drink coffee and stare out a window. Both are correct uses of the time.
Isolation optional. Presence encouraged.
